Acid Reflux Remedies

Many people suffer from uncomfortable digestion problems. Acid Reflux is one such condition which occurs as a result of digestive acids flowing back to the mouth, via the esophagus, instead of remaining within the stomach. This causes heartburn which is often quite painful. There are many different Acid Reflux remedies, including over the counter drugs, prescription medicines and natural remedies. Many over the counter products are made of natural ingredients anyway such as chalk and charcoal. It's a matter of preference and finding out what works for you.

Whist drugs obtained at the pharmacy can be effective for some people, they won't cure acid reflux but they will lessen or stop the symptoms by working on the acid. Antacids, sold under various brand names, are the most popular. They work by neutralizing the acid. Others are Histamine Receptor Antagonists, which work by reducing the amount of acid build up in the stomach. some of these drugs are known to have side effects, however, so many people will turn to more natural acid reflux remedies.

Acid Reflux Causes

What causes acid reflux varies from person to person. It can be caused by the malfunctioning of the sphincter, a muscular ring at the end of the esophagus. This muscle is supposed to prevent the stomach acid from returning to the mouth and when it doesn't the results are medically termed as GERD or Gastroesophageal reflux disease.

However, sometimes heartburn is simply caused by poor dietary habits. So improving these and making them a part of your daily routine can go a long way to prevent a re-occurrence of the symptoms.

Acid Reflux Treatment

Some sufferers treat acid reflux by going on detoxification for a while, drinking only water and taking probiotics. This may be further than you want to go, but drinking a lot of filtered water each day helps to alleviate the symptoms associated with stomach problems. Water helps to balance the pH in your stomach which neutralizes the acids. Drinking herbal teas, containing ingredients such as peppermint, ginger or liquorice is another recommendation.

Eating lots of grains, fresh vegetables and fruits and cutting down on fat and greasy meat can do a lot to treat heartburn. Garlic is also an option, as it destroys pathogenic organisms that the acid can't cope with. The garlic must be chewed or crushed.

Other Acid Reflux remedies include the Artemisia Asictica (Wormwood herb) and eating a good portion of fiber each day. Ginger works for a lot of people and can be crushed into food, taken in tablet form or made into ginger tea. Some people also recommend the papaya enzyme, taken in capsule form.

Acid reflux remedies can be a bit trial and error but it helps to make a note of any foods that may trigger heartburn. Some common examples are onions, cabbage, cucumbers and beans. You might also try elevating your upper body at night whilst sleeping to avoid waking up with painful heartburn in the morning or even in the middle of the night.

Acid Reflux Prevention

Prevention is better than cure, of course, and there are certain steps which can be taken to stop the development of acid reflux disease in the first place. These include:

1. Sitting with good posture whilst eating

2. Chewing food thoroughly and taking your time

3. Go for a walk before meals

4. Don't overeat

5. Relax after eating but avoid lying down which makes it easier for the digestive acids to move in the wrong direction

6. Have several small meals over the course of the day rather than just one big one

Some doctors recommend staying away from caffeine, alcohol and smoking.

If prevention is too late and you are already suffering from acid reflux disease then the above steps will still help. Is is important to find out which acid relux remedies work for you and to treat your accordingly. Otherwise, you are at risk of other health problems which are caused by excessive stomach acid as well as continuing discomfort.
